Gators Hold Off Strong Atkinson Soccer Team
The Ware Gator Soccer team defeated homestanding Atkinson County in a non-region match by a final of 4-3. Ware struck first in the match in the 31st minute when Yerlin Guardado collected a pass from Noah Shepard and struck it home, giving Ware the early lead at 1-0. In the 19th minute, Atkinson would equalize after being given a penalty kick, to tie the score at 1-1. Less than a minute later, Ware would again take the lead when Chris Delgadillo placed a nice cross into Denzel Stephenson, who hit it home to give Ware a 2-1 lead. A couple of minutes later, Atkinson was awarded a free kick near the top of the 18 yard box, and the ball was placed well into the net to tie the match at 2-2.
Early in the second half, Ware struck again in the 36th minute when Stephenson collected a cross from Shepard, and put it by the keeper to give Ware the lead at 3-2. The match was controlled by Ware for the next 20 minutes, and they were rewarded when Harold Guardado slipped a ball past the Atkinson center backs, which was collected by Yerlin Guardado, who made a move to avoid the goal keeper, and placed it home to give Ware a 4-2 lead.
The final 12 minutes were played back and forth, and Atkinson was able to draw one goal back, scoring with less than 10 minutes left. Ware would stiffen in the defensive third, and were able to see the match out, taking a 4-3 win.
"This was a good win. We made some mistakes, giving up two more goals off of sloppy defensive play, but we had a number of players step up, and make sure that we never fell behind, and late in the match, preserving the lead to give us the win. We are happy to take a win, but it is back to training tomorrow to prepare for our home stretch in our region, trying to solidify a position in our region to hopefully be able to host a state playoff match."
Ware travels to Statesboro High on Tuesday next week, and then to Wayne County on Thursday, as the region standings will begin to take shape.
