Region leading South Effingham came to the Swamp, and came away with a hard earned 3-2 win over the Ware Gators. South Effingham struck first on a free kick in the 27th minute of the first half, taking a 1-0 lead. The game would be hard contested between the two for the next 14 minutes, when, in the 13th minute, Yerlin Guardado took advantage of a misplayed ball by the South Effingham goal keeper, and pushed the ball into the net, knotting the match at 1-1. In the 4th minute, Ware was awarded a penalty kick, and Julio Nataren placed the ball in the back of the net, giving Ware the 2-1 lead, which is where the match stood at the half time whistle.
The second half saw more of the same, with both teams battling, especially in the midfield, and in the 26th minute, South Effingham was able to take advantage of a counter attack, and scored to tie the match at 2-2. Ware would have two excellent chances miss by inches, including one shot which just grazed off the goal post in the last 14 minutes of the match, and at the end of regulation, the match was still tied at 2-2.
The teams then began the two 5 minute overtime periods. The first five minute period passed, with the match still tied. Halfway through the second 5 minute overtime period, South Effingham was awarded a free kick, and were able to convert that into a goal to take a 3-2 lead. The final 2 minutes were played at a frantic pace, with Ware pushing forward in large numbers, but South Effingham was able to withstand, and took the 3-2 win.
"This was a tough one. We got beat by this team 6-0 the first meeting, so we have definitely improved overall as a team. In region play, though, there is no such thing as a moral victory, and we really just lost the match by not executing defensively on those free kicks. That will definitely continue to be an area of huge focus, as we head into our final 3 region matches. We are 2-3 in the region, but we still have a chance to finish anywhere from second to fourth.
We have to take care of business next week as we travel to Statesboro on Tuesday, and then Wayne on Thursday."
