Ware County gave Wayne County all they could handle but a couple of costly turnovers with under two minutes to play ended up being the difference in the game. Wayne lead 19-16 at the end of the first quarter and pulled ahead 33-25 at the half as Ware hit a shot at the buzzer to cut the lead to 8 points.
The Gators made some adjustments at the half and out scored the Jackets 18-11 in the third quarter to cut the lead to 44-43. The two teams traded leads down the stretch but the turnovers were too much to overcome as Wayne (11-4) edged the Gators (5-8) 58-55.
The Gators had a balanced scoring attack as eight Gators scored. Zak Swinson led Ware with 11 points and Jamon Holmes added 10. The rest of the scoring went like this: Byron McKelvin 8 pts, DJ Harris 7, Thomas Castellanos 7, Rock Taylor 6, Chalum Harris 3 and Jeremiah O'Hara with 2 points.
The Gators travel to Coffee on Tuesday to take on the Trojans at 7:30.
JV BOYS RESULTS: Ware 48 Wayne 44
The JV Boys raced out to a commanding 19-6 first quarter lead and then held off a strong comeback rally by the Yellow Jackets to hold on to a 48-44 victory. Wayne cut the Gator lead to 10 at the half by out scoring the Gators 15-12 in the second quarter. A solid second half by the Jackets narrowed the margin by Ware held on to get the win.
Nine Gators chipped in points for Ware with Cletwan Scriven leading Ware with 13 points. Rhaquez Jenkins added 8 points, Thomas Castellanos 7 pts, TJ Denson 6, Brandon Mills 4, Mikael Cason 3, Jaylen Melvin 3, Cameron Brown 2, Dominick Williams 2.
The Gators will take on Coffee High at 5:00 on Tuesday.
