Coach Franklin Stephens is a native of Keysville, Georgia located in Burke County Georgia. Coach Stephens attended Georgia Southern University where he started for three years as a center and guard for the 1993 Southern Conference Champions. As a senior Stephens was elected a Team Captain. Additionally, Coach Stephens was twice named All-America and All-Southern Conference while winning the Jacob’s Blocking Trophy in 1994 as the Conference’s top lineman. He graduated from Georgia Southern with a B.S. in Justice Studies and completed his teacher certification at Paine College.
As an assistant, Coach Stephens spent time in his hometown of Burke County and helped the Bears to win a region championship and one appearance in the AAA state championship game. Also, he spent time in Camden and helped the Wildcats win the 2003 5A State Championship with five region championships.
Coach Stephens became the head football coach at Tucker High School in April of 2007. During his five year tenure at Tucker High School, the Tiger football team won two state championships, three region championships and compiled an overall record of record of 64-5.
March 2012, Coach Stephens accepted the position of head football coach at Lamar County High School. During his first year the Trojans won the Region 4-AA Championship and made their first semifinal appearance. Under his guidance the Trojans won two region championships, appeared in one semi-final game and one state championship game while compiling a record of 26-2-1.
In March of 2014, Coach Stephens accepted the position of head football coach at Ware County High School. The Gators completed their first 10-0 season in school history as well as won the region 3-AAAAA Championship. Additionally, since becoming a head coach. He has helped over 70 student-athletes move on to play college football.
Coach Stephens obtained his Master’s Degree in Foundations of Education from Troy State University (2002). He earned his Educational Specialist Degree in Education Leadership from Argosy University (2006). Coach Stephens also received a Doctorate in Educational Leadership from Argosy University (2007). Coach Stephens believes that faith, education and work ethic are key factors in being successful.
Coach Stephens is married to the former L. Renee Simmons of Jacksonville, Florida. Mrs. Stephens is proud to have had the opportunity to serve her country as a former United States Marine. She completed her Doctorate Degree in Educational Leadership from Argosy University and teaches in the business department at Ware County High School. The Stephens’ are the blessed and proud parents of two children; Donovan (14) a freshman football player and Trinity (11) a cheerleader at Waycross Middle School.
Even though Coach Stephens has experienced tremendous success throughout his life; he is extremely proud of the fact that he truly learned what it means to put God as head of your life. The Stephens are members of New Mercies Christian Church of Lilburn, Georgia where Pastor Jesse Curney, III is the Senior Pastor. God Bless!!!
