Gators Edge Atco in Scrimmage

Gators Edge Atco in Scrimmage

Ware County built an early four-run advantage and held on to beat visiting Atkinson County 7-5 here Thursday night in a scrimmage. The Gators will open the 2017 season Monday at 6 p.m., with Class AAAAAAA Tift County coming to town. A season preview will be released in Monday's edition of the Waycross Journal Herald.

Six Ware County pitchers, five of which worked one inning each, handcuffed the Rebels allowing just four hits. The Gators' staff issued nine walks with only one run earned. "I thought our pitchers did a pretty good job," said head coach Tony Yeomans. "We've got to cut down on our walks though. Overall, I saw some good things and some areas where we need to get better in quickly. "The good thing about the scrimmage was the fact everybody got a chance to play. I was pleased with our at bats. We put the ball in play. The key for us is going to be doing what we're coached to do."

Offensively, the Gators banged out 11 hits with Jake Manders leading the way with three base knocks and two RBI. Acy Paulk, Jet Thomas (two RBI) and Coleman Tanner added two hits each. Victor Steedley and Jacob Hendrix collected a hit apiece. Manders scored in the first inning on a Thomas sacrifice fly to center for the early 1-0 lead. The Gators added three runs in the second to extend the advantage to 4-0. Manders' one-out bases loaded double was the big blow. The hit followed a single by Hendrix, and error on a ball hit by Cole Andreoli and Charles King being hit by a pitch. Thomas added a two-out single for the other run.

The Rebels scored a run in the third against Hendrix after Steedley and King worked a scoreless inning each. Atco cut the margin to 4-3 scoring two runs in the fifth against Manders. Ware County scored the next three runs with one crossing the plate in the fifth and two more in the sixth. Tanner's one-out infield single scored Thomas for the fifthinning run. Manders and Paulk had run-scoring singles in the sixth. Atkinson made things a little interesting in the top of the seventh scoring twice against Thomas, who worked the final two frames. The Rebels scored two after the first two batters went quietly and had the tying run at the plate when the final out was recorded. (Story compliments of the WJH)
